USA Today redesign

Interesting redesign from USA Today. Looks somewhat continental European rather than American. And of course all the visual language is designed for commonality across print and digital.

Detailed dissection at Under Consideration.

Guardian iPad

Much-delayed Guardian iPad app about to launch. Now losing money on every platform going!

Looks nicely executed, but I’m amused to hear that all other newspapers on iPad are experiments that don’t really do it right. More pertinently, this will cost £9.99 a month while the perfectly good website remains free and accessibly from the iPad web browser. An odd choice.

The paper hopes that people will pay for the experience, which amongst other things will be more ‘measured’ (i..e not updated every second). It will be interesting to see how well that approach does. Perhaps the core audience in the UK will pay while the global audience will not?
